I am also having the problem.  I had a recurring meeting (originated from an Outlook user) and received a change to tomorrow's occurrence.  I made the mistake of deleting the entire series and then re-accepting the change, and I ended up with just the exceptional occurrence, with the rest of the meeting series deleted.

Output to stdout/stderr:
Error: [calGoogleCalendar] Modifying item Engineering meeting... failed:2147500037: {
 "error": {
  "errors": [
   {
    "domain": "global",
    "reason": "forbidden",
    "message": "Forbidden"
   }
  ],
  "code": 403,
  "message": "Forbidden"
 }
}

I use a Google Calendar on my end.

Thunderbird 52.2.1 (64-bit) on Linux, Lightning 5.4, Provider for Google Calendar 3.3.
